ang bayan ang niloko, ang bayan ang magpapasya: sa lansangan ang punta!

Her choice

Wednesday, 09 07, 2005

No matter how hard Gloria Arroyo and
her allies
stop and kill the impeachment process,
she still
won't be able to rule. That much is clear.
She can
no more stop the protest actions against
her than
she can order the waves to move back.

But she thinks she can, as there are
reportedly
ploys by her to use the iron fist in getting
the
people to toe the line once her allies in
Congress
kill the impeachment process at the
plenary.

The talk is that an emergency rule will be
put in
place, with the regime getting more
repressive.

Earlier, Executive Secretary Eduardo
Ermita
disclosed the constitutional means with
which to
crack down on Palace foes, such as
declaring
martial law or emergency rule, or some
such
measure.

Martial law is out, because under the
Constitution,
she can only do this for a limited period,
and she
will have to get Congress' nod, for either
martial law
or emergency rule. She can also declare
a state of
rebellion, and perhaps even get her
allies in the
Supreme Court to rule this as
constitutional. The
SC already gave its nod to this in 2001.

But even if she does, can she succeed in
stopping
the moves to oust her by street
parliamentarians?

What is clear is that she has almost nil
public
support and will lose even more of her
remaining
allies if she resorts to strongman rule. It
will have to
come to a point that Marcos had
reached, when
even the declaration of martial rule
failed to instill
fear in the people, and the fight went on.

Not even her bishops who continue to
support her
and her immoral regime will have to step
back and
make that decision to dump her, since
they too,
would really show that they are against
the people.
They will have lost all moral ground and
become
totally irrelevant. As of now, they are
already in the
path of irrelevance, without their church
hierarchy
being in control of their priests, who are
better at
seeing the amorality of the bishops'
stance through
their pastoral letter.

And the bishops certainly know that, even
for the
Catholic religion, instilling discipline in
their priests
and nuns as well as making them toe the
line on
faith, doctrine and their claimed moral
teachings is
a must to keep the religion going.

When the priests start questioning an
official stand
of their bishops, this is already a sign of
trouble
brewing in the local institutional church.

But how long does Gloria think she can
hold on to
military support when a people are
already against
the regime and for good reason?

There can be no denying that Gloria
used all
means to prevent the evidence from
being made
public and being proved, whether in
Senate
hearings or in the impeachment hearings
at the
committee on justice.

Poll commissioner Virgilio Garcillano, for
one,
certainly couldn't have left the country
without the
clear assistance of Malacaang officials.
That is for
sure, especially when the Singapore
authorities
have reportedly confirmed that
Garcillano did arrive
in that country through a Subic aircraft,
which
means that those officials called to testify
certainly
perjured themselves.

And there is now surfacing evidence
supporting the
wiretap tapes' conversations of the poll
rigging
as discussed in the tapes.

It will be remembered that in 1986, the
military was
certainly behind then President Marcos,
as were
the then members of parliament. And the
issue
then, whether one remembers it, was the
cheating
in the polls which parliament tried to
suppress.

There was a coup staged by the military
that failed
as a coup. But when the people rose
against
Marcos while the rebel soldiers were in a
defensive
position, having closeted themselves in
the twin
camps, even the military generals and
the rank-
and-file, had to take a position of being
with, or
against the people. In the end, they had
to go with
the people.

It is a worse situation that Gloria finds
herself in,
what with the economy going downhill
and the
political instability rising with more street
protests
that will surely impact negatively on the
fiscal and
economic crises she now faces.

It would have been different if the
economy were
prospering, because no leader can get a
people to
rail against her when economically things
still look
rosy. Neither the elite, nor the masses
would even
think of staging street protests against her.

But with the spiraling prices of goods and
services,
and with business dead and dying, with
no hope of
attracting foreign investors to come to our
shores,
along with a President who thinks only of
surviving
politically, plus the burden of having
additional
taxation in e-VAT along with the oil
crisis, Gloria
Arroyo had better put it in her head that
she stands
no chance of surviving politically and
economically.

It's curtains for her. She can go quickly
and
peacefully, or get ousted messily. It's
really her
choice.

Change my mind for the better

It took me weeks to decide what my stand would be in the current political crisis that is sweeping my beloved Philippines.  I admit that at first I opposed any call for President Arroyo’s resignation. It is not because I believe that she is innocent with all the allegations against her. I actually believe that at least 80% of these allegations are true. I just didn’t want her to resign, because I didn’t saw anyone able to takeover the pressures of the Presidency. I had this big question of who would succeed her? I don’t think Vice President Noli De Castro have the capabilities of being the next President. I also don’t believe that Susan Roces would be a better leader. I don’t trust most of the current officials of both the opposition and the administration.

Now my position is for her to resign. Why did I change my mind? I did careful study, did some research on both sides of the fence. I’ve asked different credible people on their views regarding this crisis. I understand why some people is against the President’s resignation, it is another possible setback for our country etc.

But the call for her resignation is not just because of this Hello Garci… scandal, it is also the issue of morality and integrity. Now that the people don’t trust her anymore, don’t you think it is time for her to step down? Now the opposition isn’t the only group calling for her resignation, many sectors of country have echoed the call for her to do the ultimate sacrifice that is to resign. Even former President Cory Aquino had humbly begged for her resignation.

Now I am adding my voice to the millions of voices asking Mrs. Arroyo to do the ultimate sacrifice if she really loves our nation. Mrs. Arroyo, like those who have preceded me, I humbly beg you to resign and let a Transitional Council to take over for the good of our beloved nation.

Why fear?

Why fear a transitional government? Why are people afraid a transitional government for the Philippines once Arroyo resigned?  I may not know their reasons, but I would give you a glimpse or a better understanding of the proposed transitional government.

The transitional government is proposed not only by the opposition but by the most sectors as well. As proposed a council would head it. This council would be composed of representatives from different sectors. Although it is possible that the military could be part of the council, it is not a Military Junta as many of us fears. The military’s role involvement in the council would be limited to a certain amount that would prevent it from dominating the council. The council, which I have stated earlier, would be formed by different sectors. These sectors include the women, workers, peasants, farmers, and a lot more.

This transitional government would focus more on the major problems our nation is facing. These are a problem that needs an immediate action that the current and past administration failed to do. These include:

  • High inflation rate,
  • High unemployment rate,
  • Foreign debts, education,
  • Health care
  • Peace talks with the CPP-NPA-NDF
  • Peace talks with the MILF.
  • Unequal distribution of development nationwide
  • And the most important is changing our rotten system of traditional politicians or TRAPO.

This is just a glimpse or a glance based on what I know about this transitional government. You may add additional information that I missed or any of your opinions thru posting a comment. Thank you for taking time reading this. I hope I have given you a better understanding that this transitional government is not bad after all.

ERAP's return?..... No way!

Former President Joseoh "erap" Ejercito Eztrada is taking advantage of this current Philippine Leadership crisis to return to Malacañan. He reclaims his presidency and the illegitimacy of the Arroyo Administration. He and his former lawyer Atty. Paguia claims that he was unconstitutionally removed from power, claiming that the constitutional process died since the day he was ousted.

Yes the Impeachment trial against erap didn't concluded and wasn't able to follow the due process. But why did Erap left the palace if he was still the President? why did he exited the palace thru the back door (the Pasig river)? and besides the Supreme Court confirmed the legitimacy of Arroyo's succession. And if they are saying that the constituion had died, therefore they don't recognize the current government, why did Loi (Erap's egal wife) and Jinggoy (Erap's son) ran for the Senate? does this mean the two Senators were also iligimate?

And if ever it was proven that the Arroyo succession was indeed illegal, there is no way Erap could reclaim his presidency since his official term ended after the 2004 national elections, and why didn't he protested before? why now 4 years later?

A good Person equals a ggod President?

When I was about 12 years old, The administration of Joseph Eztrada, who was then Philippine President was in the brink of collapse. The President and the First Family were involved in an illegal gambling scandal called Jueteng. President Eztrada was them put into a controversial Impeachment trial. The nation stay tuned on all means of media to keep up to date with the trial. Regular TV programings nationwide was changed to makeway for the Trial coverage. Big TV networks set-up small studio-like quarters provided by the Senate within the Senate Building. It might be the highest top-rating program ever as millions of Filipinos in and out of the country stay tuned.

5 and Up(children's program hosted by kids of 5-15 years of age) was still being aired in GMA& that time. They did reports regarding the Presidential Crisis. I saw this interview of Atty. Fortun (one of Eztrada's lawyers) by a young femal upper (5 and Up host). She brought up a good question to Atty. Fortun: Is Joseph Eztrada a good President?...   Well he is a good man, answered Atty. Fortun. But a good man doesn't necessarily make a good President, she replied quickly. The lawyer paused for a second, and from that point I don't quite remember what happened next. All I remember was that Atty. Fortun was astounded by what she said. I might be wrong but I think he wasn't able to answer.

Now the country is facing another Presidential Crisis, this time President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the First Family are involved in Election Frauds & Jueteng Scandal. Now I would like to ask the same question is Arroyo a good President? or was she even a good person?

Are we Pacific Islanders?

Are the Filipinos Pacific Islanders or Asians? On my opinion we Filipinos are both. However we are more of Asian than Pacific Islander. To make it clear let me divide this into 5 major areas of knowledge; Geographicaly, Ethnicaly, Linguisticaly, Culturaly, and Historical or Politically.

Geographically speaking the Pacific Islands is an expression commonly accepted as including all of those islands in the Pacific Ocean that are collectively reffered to as Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, also sometimes known as Oceania. This usage rules out the Australian Isalnd continent, the Asia-related Indonesian, Philippine, and Japanese Archipelagoes.

The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago of about 7,107 islands and islets lying on the southeast coast of Asia. You may consider the Philippines part of the Pacific since it can be found west of the Pacific Ocean. Only few of the Western Phgilippine Islands borders nbot even the Pacific Ocean itself but the Philippine Sea which is somehow a sub-region of the Pacific Ocean. Plants and Animal life in the Philippines are closely related to her Asian neighbors. Geographically speaking the Philippines is considered part of Asia.

Ethnically the people of the Philippines are calleg Filipinos. Their ancestors who were of Malay stock, came from the Southeastern Asian mainland as well as from what is now Indonesia. From the 10th century, contacts with china resulted in a group of mixed Filipino-Chinese descent. Who account for a minotiry of the population. Spanish-Filipino and Filipino-Americans maybe distinguished by their fairer complexion, taller structure, & aquiline nose structure. A relively small numbers of Emigrants from the Indian subcontinent added to the population's racial mixture. The aboriginal inhabitants of the islands were Negritos, or Pygmies, also called Aetas or Balugas. The Malays or natives of Southeast Asia developed seaward contacts with the outside world, occured in the early centuries, they spread, traded and settled as far as Magadascar in Africa and Polynesia. Ethnically the Filipinos are Asians.

Linguistically, estimates of the total number of native languages or dialects spoken in the Philippines differ; around 70 to 100 ore more. Traditionally, 8 major linguistic groups are identified; Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Ilongo, Bicolano, Waray-Waray, Pampango, and Pangasinense. The national and most widely spoken language of the Philippines is Filipino, based on Tagalog. Filipino and English are the two official languages & mediums of instruction. The languages of the Philippines belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian family also called Austronesian Languages, takes roots from Southeast Asia and stretches From the island of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa, all the way to tiny, isolated Easter Island (Rapa Nui), and extending into Taiwan, Vietnam, Northern Australia, New Zealand and most of the Melanesian and Polynesian Islands, the languages in this single family show the common ancestry by the many cognates (words in common) present. Linguistically Filinos are Asians.

Culturally, The philippines had been strongly influenced by the west because of 333 years of Spanish and 48 years of U.S. rule. But string family ties and other Asian customs remained. SOme cultural influences such as Sanskrit-based writting system were carried to the Islands. But in comparison with other parts of the region, the influence of bith China and India were of little importance. The filipinos unlike most of his Malay brothers, never adopted Hinduism or Buddhism. The Philippines has been strengthening its Asian ties without abandoning its Western acquisitions. Culturally, Filipinos are Asians.

Historically or Politically, the Philippines is the only nation in Southeast Asia that became a subject to western colonialism before it had the opportunity to develop either a centralized government ruling over a large territory or an advanced elite culture. The Philippines was also the only Spanish colony in Asia. History has it that the Philippines was once one of the most progressive nation in Asia, only second to Japan. The Philippines is one of the nations who founded the Association of SouthEast Asian Nations or ASEAN. Politically and Historically speaking the Philippines is part of Asia.

I hope this would clear some confusions if the Filipinos are Asians or Pacific Islanders. I hope I made it clear that the Filipinos are more of an Asian than Pacific Islander, unless someone would come up with superior evidences that could prove me wrong.

(I wrote this for my classmates and friends who were saying that Filipinos are Pacific Islanders and not Asians)

After Highschool?

Earlier this year I had a chance to chat with my friend from elementary school bcak in the Philippines. Her name was Ellen, she used to be my close friend. So we chat for a while then we got to point where she asked me what are my plans after highschool? which school would I attend for college?

After college of course I would love to attend a University, I just don't know yet which one to take, either Architecture, Law, Political Science, Journalism, or Fine Arts. Actually I wanted to take all of them at the same time but obviuosly I can't. So I told her that I would love to enter the University of the Philippines in DIliman. But since no one here in U.S. supports me with this, It would be impossible for me to attend UP DIliman. Anyway I also wanted to attend Hatvard University hehe. But even though I wasn't able to study in UP I would still retrun to the Philippines and serve my nation and my people to the best of my abilities. When she heared about this, she was like "What the @$?*?,are you nuts? you are are already in the world's most powerful country and already have the opportunity to live a stable life,Didn't you know that a lot of Filipinos are struggling to get where yiu are right now and yet you are willing to give it all up and return to the Philippines." I told her no matter what will happen to me, I'll still end up serving my country and my people. Then she replied " with all the corruption in our country, why would you serve a country where even her own citizens does not have trust to their government." Then I told her "that's exactly me reason to serve our country, to help bring positive changes."

I'm not saying that our country needs me, but  my point is that our country needs people like me or better than me to serve her and her people honestly. She later told me that she at first also wanted to serve our country, but beacuse of a rising cost of living and growing ppoverty, she couldn't decide f she would  prioritize the country first rather than her family's future. She also promised me that wether she would end up an immigrant or a citizen to another nation she would still find a way to help our motherland.  She even joked that she would make her future children to study in the US but will return to the Philippines and serve the Filipno people.

Ever since I was young, serving my country had been my greatest dream. I may never be the best one serve my country, but I would always be serving my country to the best that I can.

I always get pisted off whenever I hear a Filipino would say that the Philippines is a hopeless nation to overcome  all her current crisis, both social, political and economical and once again be one of Asia's most progressive nation. Oh well I want to tell them that they are definitely wrong. If only the Filipinos would learn from the mistakes of the past and all together march for a brighter future, nothing is impossible. We've been surviving worst things in the past, then why not this time? many filipinos are blaming the Government for not doing a good job. I admit I couldn't blame them from blaming the government, well its obvious that they are not doing a good job as they promised during the campaign. But think first if you didn't vote them would they be in thier postions right now? I f you only voted wisely would we suffer such things? and for the TRAPOS! (TRAditional POliticians) would you please serve the people who put you in power and the nation that gave birth to you rather than serving your pockets first!
